Sen. Conrad extends invitation to attend U.S. Senate Budget Committee field hearing

Senator Kent Conrad asked us to extend an invitation to you to attend a field hearing of the U.S. Senate Budget Committee on Friday, June 2, at 2:30 p.m. in Discovery Hall, Energy & Environmental Research Center.

The hearing will focus on the importance of the federal investment in education and research programs at UND and other public colleges and universities in North Dakota. The witnesses will highlight how federal funding helps local communities, creates good-paying jobs, stimulates economic development and partnership efforts to address local, regional, and national concerns, and produces skilled graduates to serve our state and nation.

NCAA Classification Task Force presents report to President

The NCAA Classification Task Force, chaired by Vice President for Student and Outreach Services Bob Boyd, was charged to examine the factors involved in deciding whether to move to Division I status in athletics, or remain Division II.

UND, Minot State special education programs receive award

The special education resident teacher program at the University and the rural special education strategist program at the North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities at Minot State University have received a national award in teacher preparation from the American Council on Rural Special Education. The 2006 Exemplary Program Award for their excellence in interagency collaboration in personnel training was presented to Lynne Chalmers from UND and Brent Askvig from MSU.

"There has been a national shortage of special education teachers for many years," said Chalmers, professor in special education. "Dr. Askvig and I have been working within our universities and with local school districts to assure that rural North Dakota students with disabilities have quality teachers. The local school administrators and our state special education leaders have been instrumental in our success in this area."

Both Chalmers and Askvig also point to their partnerships across universities. "About three years ago, the education deans at UND and MSU signed a collaborative agreement to support special education teacher preparation," said Askvig. "That agreement allowed us to demonstrate a strong commitment to the students and the schools. When we show that the university deans are behind this, it isn't just a one time thing. We are in it for the long term and schools respect that."

This year there are 29 special education resident teachers in the program.

The Special Education Resident Teacher Program at UND has been in operation for nearly nine years, and has prepared over 68 special education teachers who are now employed by 28 different school districts across the state. This program works with local school districts to find and prepare teachers who live in rural towns. Coursework is delivered through summer training sessions and distance delivery modes during the school year. Federal funding, support from the North Dakota special education office, and local contributions have made the program possible.

Doctoral examination set for Robyn Drach

The final examination for Robyn Drach, a candidate for the Ph.D. degree with a major in clinical psychology, is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, in 210 Corwin-Larimore Hall. The dissertation title is "Pain Recall in Primary Dysmenorrhea." Jeff Holm (psychology) is the committee chair.

Anatomy chair candidate visits campus

Richard Nowakowski, New Jersey Professor of Spinal Cord Research and professor of neuroscience and cell biology, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Piscataway, N.J., is a candidate for the position of chair of anatomy at SMHS. He will visit the campus and present a research seminar Thursday, June 1, at noon, in the United Hospital Lecture Hall, Room 1370.

Nowakowski's topic is "System Biology Approaches to Neurostem Cell Biology.”

The primary focus of Dr. Nowakowski’s research is that neurostem cells produce the neurons and glia of the brain. During development neurostem cells are charged with the task of producing the most diverse organ in the body. In the adult nervous system, two populations of neurostem cells persist to produce a small number of neurons that integrate into the circuitry of the adult brain. We are using combined genomic and genetic approaches and integrating the data with systems biology based methods. This novel approach can be used to gain entry into an understanding of the molecular controls that regulate neurostem cells and their ability to produce a regionally appropriate diversity of neurons. An understanding of these molecular control mechanisms is an essential prerequisite for the future engineering of neurostem cells to effect repair of the CNS after it is damaged by trauma, stroke or degenerative diseases.

PPT/COBRE seminar will focus on inflammation

Martin J. Stone, associate professor, of chemistry, Indiana University, will present "Chemokine-Receptor Specificity: The Molecular Basis of Leukocyte Trafficking in Inflammation," Friday, June 2, at 4 p.m. in Room 1360(Clifford Haugen Lecture Hall)at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences Building.

Dr. Stone is invited by the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence Pathophysiology of Neurodegenerative Disease and the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Therapeutics. Everyone is welcome.

20 West Point cadets to begin helicopter flight training

Twenty West Point cadets will begin a four-week helicopter flight training program on Monday, June 5, at UND Aerospace. Each training day will consist of academic studies and hands-on flight instruction after which they will have earned a student’s pilot certificate and logged enough hours to solo.

A second group of 20 cadets will begin their training after July 4.

This initiative is a continuation of an agreement established in 2003 between the UND and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point to train cadets to fly Army helicopters. To date, UND has trained 100 West Point cadets.

Doctoral examination set for Lynn Mahlum

The final examination for Lynn Mahlum, a candidate for the Ph.D. degree with a major in teaching and learning, is set for 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 8, in 206 Education Building. The dissertation title is "It's Just Who I Am!: Teacher Candidates Speak Out About Dispositions Assessment." Myrna Olson (teaching and learning) is the committee chair.

Young entrepreneurs summer camp planned

The Center for Innovation will host a Young Entrepreneur Mini-Society Summer Camp June 12-16, sponsored by NDSU Extension, Grand Forks County 4-H and UND’s summer program council. The camp is open to all youngsters ages 9-12 who want to learn how to run their own business. The Camp is also open for local teachers and 4-H and Scout Leaders who want to integrate more entrepreneurial activities into their classrooms or club meetings. This is a unique combination of youth and adults working and learning together in an experienced-based, fun-focused summer camp.

Campers will form their own society, give it a name, elect its leaders and create their own currency which they can earn, invest, save or spend as they see fit. The members of this new community will learn how to recognize economic opportunities and then open individual businesses they believe will supply the goods and services that their fellow citizens need and want. Along the way, citizens will encounter dilemmas that naturally occur to entrepreneurs.  From those unique individual experiences we will all learn more about the processes and the unlimited possibilities of entrepreneurship, active citizenship and cooperative community development.

The five days for youth participants will begin at 8:00 and end at 12:00. Each day will include a town meeting, product development, marketing practice and a campus field trip to highlight entrepreneurial thinking around UND. On Friday, there will be a final market day, auction and awards ceremony for campers, friends and parents. The registration fee for youth entrepreneurs is $ 50, which includes snacks, materials and a t-shirt. There is no registration fee for adult campers, and they may earn up to two semester credits from either UND or NDSU for their participation.

Note walking challenge web site change

Enjoy walking? Feel stressed and need a break? Want to get in shape? Want to become renewed and invigorated when outside? Check out the new walking trails on campus.

The physical wellness subcommittee, along with Rick Tonder, associate director of facilities, has created 14 walking/running trails for the UND campus. The trails, approximately one mile in length, cover most regions of campus and can be interconnected for a 5-10 mile walk. Three of the trails are indoor routes for year-round use. The School of Medicine loop even includes stair climbing to increase the workout.

Metcalfe named TRIO Programs director

Elaine Metcalfe has accepted the position of director of TRIO Programs. Ralph Engelstad Arena offers Sioux Shop discount

Effective June 1, the Ralph Engelstad Arena is offering to all staff, faculty, and current students, a 15 percent discount in the Sioux Shop. Discounts will not be given in addition to sale items. When purchasing items you will be required to present a UND photo ID to the clerk at the time of purchase. You will not be able to "give" your discount to a friend, or relative. This discount is a benefit to you and must be respected as one. Abuse of this benefit will result in termination of the discount.

55psi Biking Club formed

The 55psi Biking Club has been formed to promote the hobby of bicycle touring in the greater Grand Forks area.

Join us for two hours of cool breezes, colorful hues and the fragrant essences of summer foliage. Here’s a great way to “get into gear” this summer.

The group is open to UND students, faculty, and residents of Grand Forks. Starting June 11, we'll meet Sunday mornings at noon in front of the Memorial Union and will bike for approximately two hours along one of several different routes, designed for the beginner to intermediate cycler. At the midpoint of the ride, a pit stop will be made at either Starbucks or Urban Stampede, depending on the route.
