The UND Flying Team successfully defended its 2000 National Championship by winning the 2001 national Intercollegiate Flying Association, National SAFECON, its 12th National Championship in the last 17 years. This is only the second time that a host team has won at home in the 53-year history of the SAFECON. The first was the UND Flying Team in 1989.

"Government Services Online: The Electronic Frontier," a free hands-on demonstration of a one-stop shopping Internet site for local, state and federal government, will be held Friday, June 1, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Memorial Union Lecture Bowl.

Sponsored by the College of Business and Public Administration, the workshop will introduce Grand Cities citizens, business people and government officials to the E-Gov Initiative, a web site that will give them immediate access to the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Postal Services. The site allows users to submit forms and complete transactions online, and streamlines application processes. Participants will have an opportunity to visit the site online during the workshop.

The schedule follows:

8:30 to 9 a.m., Registration; 9 to 10 a.m., overview of the E-Gov Initiative; 10 to 10:30 a.m., questions; 10:30 to 11 a.m., depart Lecture Bowl for computer labs; and 11 a.m. to noon, hands-on computer access for all participants.

The E-Gov Initiative is a national technological advancement program started by members of the Belcourt Indian Reservation. The team is comprised of people from the Federal Social Security Administration, the U.S. Postal Service, UND faculty and staff, as well as technology experts from the business community. Two goals of the team are (1) to maximize user access to local, state and federal government services, and (2) to make the project as user friendly as possible.

UND serves as the program's "center of excellence" because of the long-standing success of the Indian Studies Program and our technological facilities.

The event is open to the public and there is no charge.



TRIO's Upward Bound summer program will begin June 3 and end June 28. This program involves 70 high school students who will attend classes on campus and will conclude with a week-long trip to Yellowstone Park for classroom field experiences. The Upward Bound program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and serves first generation and low income students.

Myth, Memory and Imagination: July 24 through September 30. A thematic exhibition showcasing the American South, past and present. Unified by the collector's sensibility, the objects selected for Myth, Memory and Imagination reflect the essence of Southern life. These amplify a number of common themes: home and land, family and community, ritual and religion from the viewpoints of different artists. In its entirety, the exhibition illustrates a more inclusive view of the Southern experience - a revision of the myth of the Old South to reflect its complexity and multiculturalism.

Registration for Summer Arts Camp offered by the North Dakota Museum of Art June 11-July 27 is at a record high. Parents and guardians are encouraged to enroll their children, ages 6-12, soon to ensure a place in this summer's popular art camp.

Summer Arts Camp, in its fourth year, is an art studio providing young people with the opportunity to build with their imaginations. With practicing visual artists, children learn the basic elements of art and build artworks indoors and outdoors based on their everyday experiences with the artist and children in the camp.

There are six one-week camps for different age groups, and the hours are Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. During the camps, artists and children work side-by-side in a variety of creative activities including painting, drawing, hiking, building, dancing, writing and singing.

Morgan Owens, an artist and the education coordinator at the North Dakota Museum of Art, will lead the first session, "Getting Framed." Children will explore frames as places to paint, draw, and attach pictures to tell stories in fun and inventive ways. Kim Fink, Assistant Professor of Art at UND, will lead session two, "Stamp, Rub and Roll," in which young people will create large mural-size artworks and smaller hand-held artworks on paper using printmaking techniques. Session three, "Makin' It Up," will be led by Roy McBride from Minneapolis, who will collaborate with children on artworks that incorporate poetry, written stories, music, and drawings. Melanie Muus and Amy Grack, naturalists from the Dakota Science Center, will lead the young people in session four on a week-long expedition using tools of science and art to explore the prairie, wetlands and forests of Turtle River State Park. Then each participant will create artworks based on the line and shape of flora and fauna in each habitat. This is a collaborative effort between the Dakota Science Center and the North Dakota Museum of Art. In session five, young people will collaborate with storytelling artist Shantuh Nurrulah from Chicago, and in session six they will work with Lisa Muller, a mosaic artist from Phoenixville, Pa., to create a mosaic mural for permanent display in Grand Forks.

All art materials for Summer Arts Camp participant will be provided. Students must bring a sack lunch and share the responsibility of bringing snacks through each session. Applicants may register for more than one session. Camp tuition is $75 for Museum non-members, $65 for members, and scholarships are available. Sessions are limited to 20 participants. The public is invited to Meet the Artist talks at the Museum every Thursday evening of Summer Arts Camp at 7:30 p.m. These informal talks are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Summer Arts Camp is made possible with support in part by Shirley Bostrom, Ecolab, the Grand Forks Herald, the Grand Forks Park District, Sam and Char Myers, and the Art Department at UND.

The College of Business and Public Administration and the Division of Continuing Education will hold a "Get the Buzz on Biz" camp July 30-Aug. 3. This five-day camp allows students in grades 6-8 to learn what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur, and how to organize, manage and fund a business.

Features of this year's camp include a full-day field trip to Fargo and the opportunity for students to create and market their own unique ice cream flavors.

The students participate in a graduation ceremony Friday, Aug. 3, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parents, community sponsors, and camp team members are invited to attend. A graduation luncheon follows the ceremony.

The cost to attend is $25, thanks to the Grand Forks Optimist Club which will pay half of the $50 tuition. Tuition includes the Buzz on Biz Guide, snacks, and a Buzz on Biz T-shirt. Camp sponsors include Ronald McDonald House Charities, Grand Forks Optimist Club, Cass Clay Creamery, College of Business and Public Administration, Division of Continuing Education and others. New! Better Safe Than Sorry, June 19, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., 235 Rural Technology Center. This awareness workshop will cover general safety issues that all employees should be familiar with regardless of position. Topics will include: fire safety, incident reporting, safe lifting, ergonomics, hazardous materials, personal protective equipment, and reporting emergencies. Male participants are sought for a study on nicotine and memory being conducted in the Department of Psychology by Dimitri Poltavski, a graduate student in psychology. You must be a smoker who has smoked at least 10 cigarettes a day for the previous six months, and be between 18 and 35 years of age to participate. Participants will be paid $25. There will be intermittent power outages on weekends that will include quite a few buildings on campus at a time through June 30. The outages will allow contractors to complete the electrical high voltage project.

Per House Bill 1197, effective April 18, in-state mileage reimbursement rates for personal car mileage were increased from $0.25 per mile to $0.31 per mile for each mile actually and necessarily traveled in the performance of official duty when such travel is by motor vehicle, or $0.27 per mile if the travel is by truck, the use of which is required by the employing entity. Out-of- state mileage rates remained the same.

In addition, if only one person engages in such travel in a motor vehicle exceeding any geographical point 300 miles beyond the borders of this state (previously 150 miles), reimbursement is limited to $0.18 per mile for miles driven in excess of 600 miles of round trip out-of-state travel.

For example, travel from Grand Forks to Minneapolis would be calculated as follows: Grand Forks to Minneapolis: 360 miles, 300 x $0.31 plus 60 x $0.18 = $103.80

Minneapolis to Grand Forks: 360 miles, 300 x #0.31 plus 60 x $0.18 = $103.80

Total Reimbursement: $207.60

The North Dakota Museum of Art exhibition galleries, Museum Shop and Museum Caf� remain open despite construction work outside the front door. Artworks from the Museum's permanent collection will be on exhibit through July 15.

Just in time for summer travels and lake activities, the Museum Shop sale offers huge reductions in children's educational toys and art supplies, such as paints, brushes, drawing pads, and crayons. Other sale items include Earth's Eden Body Silk, Primal Soaps, jewelry, wooden dishes from the Philippines, Magnetic Poetry, and an eclectic range of art books.

The Museum Caf�, under the management of Liz Stempinski, is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the week, with lunch served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Caf� specializes in exotic salads, quiches, vegetarian fare, Mexican dishes, pita pizzas, and unique soup and sandwich specials made fresh daily. Liz's famous fresh strawberry pie and mudd pie can be bought by the slice and, with advance notice, whole pies can be ordered. Coffees, Italian sodas, mochas, teas, juices, specialty drinks and delectable cookies are available all day. Call 777-4195 for orders to go. High Tea reservations may be made with a two-day notice.

In other Museum news, registrations are still being taken for the Museum's Summer Arts Camp for children, and Summer Music concerts begin on June 26 with folk-singer Judy Lunseth performing. Concerts will be held Tuesday evenings through July 31. However, there will be no concert on July 3.

The North Dakota Museum of Art is located on Centennial Drive south of Twamley Hall. Museum hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The NIMH provides support to expand basic research on the processes and mechanisms involved in the experience and expression of emotion. Applications are requested for small grants (R03s) to support projects in a broad range of topics related to research in emotions. Examples of appropriate projects include the development of methodological studies, studies on relationships between emotion and cognition, developmental aspects of emotion, individual differences and their biological and/or sociological influences, and emotional processes in substance abuse, mental disorders, and physical disease. The DHHS Office of Research Integrity (ORI) provides support for research on research integrity. The purpose is to foster empirical research on the institutions, processes, and values that affect integrity in research. The sponsoring agencies are particularly interested in studies that will inform policy making at DHHS, NIH, and research institutions, with the goal of fostering appropriate attention to integrity in publicly funded research programs. This program seeks to address the need for more and better information on the factors that encourage and/or discourage integrity in publicly funded research. Particular areas of interest include but are not limited to: research norms and/or practices; institutional climate and responsibility; education on the responsible conduct of research (RCR); mentor/trainee relationships; data acquisition, management, sharing, and ownership; responsible authorship; integrity of publication practices and the research record; conflict of interest; research collaborations and issues that may arise from such collaborations; and the meaning of research misconduct and the regulations, policies, and guidelines that govern research misconduct in PHS-funded institutions. Relevant research perspectives and disciplines include, but are not limited to: anthropology, applied philosophy, business, economics, education, information studies, law, organizational studies, political science, psychology, sociology, and survey and evaluation research, plus the physical, biomedical, and clinical sciences, including nursing. The ORI intends to commit approximately $500,000 in FY 2002. Deadlines: Although not required, and not binding, prospective applicants are asked to submit a Letter of Intent by October 15, 2001. The National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), and Mental Health (NIMH), and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, the Parkinson's Disease Foundation/National Parkinson's Foundation, and the Parkinson's Alliance are collaborating to award Fast Track Grants for Parkin-son's Disease Research to encourage novel, innovative, or high impact approaches to the field of Parkinson's Disease (PD) research within the framework of the exploratory/developmental granting mechanism to enhance and escalate discoveries beneficial to PD. The intent is to enhance our understanding of the genetic and environmental causes of PD, develop appropriate models relevant to understanding and treating the disease, and develop innovative strategies to prevent, limit, or reverse the pathogenesis of PD. Applications may focus on epidemiology, genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, physiology, or clinical studies. An important component of disease cure or prevention is translation of basic discoveries to their eventual application to the patient, so studies utilizing translational or "bench-to-bedside" approaches are encouraged. Collaborative efforts of basic neurobiologists and clinicians are welcomed. An applicant may request a project period of up to 2 years and a budget for direct costs of up to $125,000 per year. The Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) program supports fellowships and associated training that will enable graduate students and advanced undergraduates in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology to serve in K-12 schools as resources knowledgeable about both the content and applications of science, mathematics, engineering, and technology. Academic institutions apply for awards to support fellowship activities. Institutions are responsible for: 1) selecting Fellows; 2) partnering with school districts for placement of Fellows in schools; and 3) providing appropriate training for Fellows. The Fellows will serve as resources for teachers in science and mathematics instruction. Expected outcomes include improved communication and teaching skills for the Fellows, enriched learning by K-12 students, professional development opportunities for GK-12 Teachers, and strengthened partnerships between institutions of higher education and local school districts. The PI must be a faculty member in science, mathematics, engineering, or technology. Since an institution may submit no more than two proposals in which it is the only participating institution in the prospective award, interested applicants should notify ORPD that they intend to submit a proposal.
